What is the European Heritage Label?
In 2005, at France’s initiative, various European Union Member States decided to create the European Heritage Label, awarded to sites that bear witness to the history of Europe’s heritage, chosen for their symbolic value and their role in European history.
Now awarded direclty by the European Union, the European Heritage Label aims to :
- help European citizens better understand the history of Europe and the construction of the European Union, as well as that of their common cultural heritage;
- raise awareness of the European dimension of the sites;
- strengthen intercultural dialogue, in particular through education in the arts, culture and history.
To date, 80 European sites have been awarded the European Heritage Label.
The project led by the PIC Rashi, ‘Rashi of Troyes, European Place of Remembrance’, has been awarded the European Heritage Label as part of the 2025 selection process. This recognition highlights the importance of Rashi’s work and legacy in Europe’s intellectual, cultural and spiritual history.
PIC Rashi's application
From the moment it was established on 30 June 2023, PIC Rashi began the work required to prepare its application for the European Heritage Label. This application was presented to the French jury in November 2024.
After being shortlisted at national level, the application was forwarded by the French Ministry of Culture to the European Commission on 28 February 2025. The project was then among the 21 sites shortlisted for the 2025 edition of the label.
During 2025, all applications were examined by an independent European jury tasked with selecting the winning sites. Following this process, the project ‘Rashi of Troyes, European Place of Remembrance’ was awarded the European Heritage Label.
